Spring upselling tips; how to increase your hotel revenue

The spring is all about the ladies. Mother’s Day, International Women’s Day, and hen’s nights. While we know that women deserve more than just these days, we can still try to make that one day (or long weekend) special.
As a hotelier you probably already have some spring marketing in progress, targeting men to take their loved ones on a pampering long weekend, or targeting women to go on a hen’s trip.
In this article, we are sharing some tips on how to make these events even more memorable. Granted you already have some ideas, but maybe ours are different, feel free to share yours with us in the comments below!

First step: Identify your travel personas

Who comes to your hotel, who would you like to attract? Couples? Group of women? Families for mother’s day? Match your offers and events with the type of traveler that visits your property, think about what they would like to do. Possibly a women’s self-defense class is better for a group of women than a mother’s day event or a couple’s weekend. More about travel personas here.

Second step
Create offers your guests would like to buy. Group multiple things together so your guests can have a fuller experience, buying a package instead of just one service/offer. This way you can also make more revenue because you are selling more than just one thing. An example would be: room service or room upgrade separately, while coupled it would be: a room upgrade with a romantic set up and a bottle of something – named as You deserve an upgrade (or something catchier 😉)

So what are our tips?

For a group of girls: yoga, self-defense, art workshops, or spa treatments together, drink & snack options. For the morning, a late checkout, breakfast (with mimosas) in the room, and a morning-after care package with facemasks and such.

For a Mother’s day getaway: spa treatments together, fine dining, wine tasting, art workshop and brunch the next day.

For a couple: fine dining, wine tasting, couple’s massage, drink or romantic arrangement in the room, late check-out and breakfast in the room the next day.

Third step: Upselling.

How to make sure people are buying your offers and extras? Firstly you need to reach them with the information before their arrival, so they can order in advance, and you can arrange, organize and manage your time accordingly.

You can do this via a pre-stay email, advertising on your website or on social media. We would suggest a pre-stay email with a ‘book directly and right now’ link. By doing this, people can easily arrange their activities within a couple of clicks, fuss-free!

Check that you are not overwhelming your customers with information. We live in an age where information is very valuable but it comes at us from too many sources too loudly at the same time. Make sure your ads are tasteful and not plentiful.

What else can you as a hotelier do to make revenue on this day?

Most of these events you host could be available to the public, so besides keeping your guests happy, you earn an extra coin.
In addition to that, you could promote direct booking with a post-stay email, so your guests come back. If you decide to reach out with a discount code, why not put your bookin.com or Tripadvisor site’s link in there so guests can rate you with a click or two.
